Jump to: navigation, search

In masonry construction, a small stone used to prop up a larger stone. The process involved (a most objectionable one) is termed pinning-up or underpinning. It causes the pressure on the block to be thrown on a few points instead of being equally distributed over it, and exposes the stone to cracking.
