A drill for making borings in earth strata. It consists of a revolving shank having a hollow steel bit under which chilled steel shot are made to travel. The rotation and pressure cause the shot to mill away the rock leaving a portion of it sticking upward inside the drill. At suitable intervals the core is broken off and brought to the surface for examination.
