Content Categorization Guide

One of the most important goals, besides including high quality article with complete references, is to properly categorize the content of Structural Wiki.

Types of Content

  • portals - introduction for a given topic
  • regular wiki pages - pages dealing with a specific topic (term definition, design example)
  • galleries - grouping of related picture or photographs

Portals

A portal is introductory page for a given topic. List of portals provides a list of existing or proposed portals.

Topics and Grouping of Pages

For any given topic, such as bearing design or plate design, the following types of content are relevant:

  • overall concept (from general idea to specific, code-based treatment)
  • design guidelines
  • derivation of underlying equations
  • construction procedures
  • design examples
  • sample drawings and details
  • failures
  • photographs
  • inspection procedures
  • references

All pages related to a topic will be interlinked by using navigation boxes to simplify navigation.

Navigation Boxes

Navigation boxes are used to simplify navigation within a given topic.

Categories

Categories enable broader navigation over related wiki pages, not necessarily belonging to a given topic.

Templates

Templates are used to set up navigation boxes and other content.

Current Goals

The current goal is to completely import glossary of bridge and civil engineering terminology from digitized Bridge Engineering book. Refer to Category:Glossary for more details. Software Database Cross Linking

Making bi-directional links between software database entries and corresponding wiki entries will enable to provide more complete content. We plan to link the following bi-directionally link the following items from the software database:

Resources List

  • StructuralWiki:Resources with a list of directories, associations, journals, etc. - once completed, add to navigation menu

Portals

  • setup basic content for portals

Photographs

  • add photographs and other graphical content

Desired Pages

Desired Categories

  • Milestone Publications - publications that made lasting impact on the civil engineering profession
  • ... - to designate page in progress
  • Add Wiki Link for pages for which link needs to be added from software database
