Draw rest

A pile and timber structure, ballasted with rock, built approximately at right angles to the bridge tangent and extending up and down stream so as to underlie the draw span when it is open, thereby affording protection from passing vessels and providing a support for the ends of the span when open. Built sometimes of masonry.
